Solar energy technology is changing the rules of the game when it comes to electricity production. Thousands and thousands of scientists around the world have joined to one single goal: To accomplish expanding solar energy and become it global and affordable for everyone and more efficient.
In the last years, there have been a bunch of discoveries and creations to help to improve the efficiency levels of solar panels, but there are three specific developments that have been the most remarkable, and these are the following ones:
An advanced solar cell production
A team of researchers from the Washington State University has produced a new material that could work as an alternative to silicon, meanwhile, it has higher levels of efficiency, besides it generates cadmium telluride (CdTe). This new material is called perovskites, and it was found on Russia for the first time and currently, scientists have found that it’s properties are significantly useful in the process of receiving and producing solar cells.
The use of perovskite in solar cell manufacturing not only can create an impact on the panel’s prices, making them more affordable. But also, it is expected to increase the levels of electricity production.
Thinner panels for cheaper products
Technologists from MIT have joined to the researchers of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the results of the combinations have been amazing, the team has accomplished creating a panel with reduced manufacturing costs, which means more affordable panels to the final client. The development consists of making the silicon cells thinner.
It is not the first time that scientists have tried with this idea, but opposite to previous attempts, this one is based on using thinner silicon cells, which happen to be stronger and more solid than other materials used before. The final result will be panels with the same levels of efficiency for more affordable prices.
Chlorophyll molecule into solar cells
Plants use a molecule called Chl or Chlorophyll when making the photosynthesis process and scientists have been analyzing the behavior of this molecule into photosynthesis in order to incorporate it into the solar cells production. The investigation is based on recreating this process but applied to artificial in order to capture solar energy and convert it into electricity.
It is fair to say that scientists are trying to develop an artificial process of photosynthesis based on solar energy. It is the very first time that something like this is being tried, but researchers involved have high expectations for the experiment.
