It’s World Environment Day!

Each year, on June 5 the World Environment Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. This is the result of several actions that have been taken by the United Nations (UN) in the last 40 years, with the aim of raising awareness about environmental issues. More than a public holiday, it’s a celebration and creating consciousness in the population about this problem.

What is it?

The World Environment Day basically consists on groups of people taking action in order to stimulate awareness and enhance political actions about the environmental issues we’re going through; such as beach clean-ups, tree planting, street rallies and parades, cultural activities and awareness-raising campaigns.

Where it’s celebrated?

The World Environment Day is promoted by the United Nations and since the governments from different nations have decided to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in this fight for our plant; each year a different country hosts the event by organizing activities, international environmental conventions and agreements between all the governmental institutions and countries that are part of this movement, such as New Zealand, Kenya, Spain, Poland and United States. This year, the host country was Colombia.

History

The World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly and it was the representation of the opening of the Stockholm Conference of the Human Environment and it’s celebrated in over 100 countries around the world each year.

The theme of 2020 World Environment Day is “Time for Nature” and it’s mainly focused on the essential infrastructures that help support life on Earth and provide it, as well as human development. In first instance, the Convention on Biological Diversity or COP 15 was going to take place in this year’s celebration but due to the COVID 19 pandemic was rescheduled for 2021.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
