Dubai Gas Stations will now have solar panels!

As a proof of the United Arab Emirates commitment to sustainable energy, the responsible of over 100 gas stations operations in Dubai, called Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc), has made public the decision of power all of their new gas stations with solar energy, in order to provide energy to the forecourt and other services included.

The investment will be about 20$ million to 30$ million, as they are planning to open 48 gas stations in the UAE, starting with two that were opened at the end of the past year with photovoltaic panels located on their roofs in order to produce energy.

What Enoc has planned is to install a solar system in old stations too, if they are able to support it. In case that the conventional gas statios couldn´t allowed a solar panels installation, they will proceed to modify the structure so they can hold up the photovoltaic devices.

The panels that are being installed on this gas stations are able to generate upto 150kWh of energy, which represents 30% more energy than the one needed for all the services. The excess of the energy collected is going to be transmitted to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA), the local electrical grid. The stations will also count with other “green” functions, such as an advanced Vapour Recovery System, a system that recycles wastewater, since clean water is not very abundant in the Arabian Peninsular, they will also have electric car chargers.

The ENOC’s group chief executive officer, HE Saif Humaid Al Falasi, said: “Our goal is to expand our network to 191 service stations in the lead up to Expo 2020 Dubai, which will significantly add to the ease of customers to access their fuel and convenience-store requirements.”

Dubai has always been one of the countries that contributes the most with renewable energy and they are proving it. Recently, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has declared that they will lease 200 Tesla electric cars for use as taxis in UAE, another important reason to establish more electric charging infrastructures in the country.
